Stillwater, Okla.---The 11th-ranked Wayland Baptist's women's cross country team placed ninth in a field of 25 in the University division of the Cowboy Jamboree hosted by Oklahoma State on Saturday morning.

Competing against Division I teams from across the country and running a 6K race for the first time this season, the Pioneer women finished ahead of teams representing the University of Oklahoma, Texas Christian, Texas Tech, and UT-Arlington.

Sophomore Caroline Karunde ran an amazing race, finishing as the runner-up in the university division, just three seconds behind the winner from Kansas State with a time of 20:33. Freshman Purity Biwott was also among the leaders, completing the course in 21:16 to finish sixth.

Senior Erin Britton was 49th with a time of 22:44, and fellow senior Kydia Echols ran a 23:25 to finish 78th. Sophomore Diana Gutierrez just missed the top 100, finishing 101st with a time of 23:59. Freshmen Selene Lopez (24:06 - 110th) and Katie Roland (24:32 - 122nd) also competed for the WBU women.

The Wayland men finished 20th as a team in the University division. Junior Kirby Dunn was the first Pioneer to cross the finish line as he ran a time of 26:32 to finish 67th. Freshman Michael Sandoval ran the 8K course in 27:18 to place 95th, while fellow freshman Luis Pena was 114th with a time of 27:42.

Sophomore Kail Kidd completed the course in 27:44 for 117th place and Lucius Lopez, a freshman ran a 27:48 in 120th place. Rounding out the WBU competitors were junior Adam Henthorn (27:55 - 122nd) and sophomore John Keith (28:14 - 131st).

The Pioneer men will race next week in Levelland at the South Plains Invitational, while the women will have a couple of weeks off before they travel to Fayetteville, Ark. to run in the Chile Pepper Festival.
