OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. --- Erika Raymond scored 21 points to lead the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens to a 74-64 win over Mid-America Christian University on Thursday evening at Gaulke Activity Center.
After falling down by seven early, the Queens outscored the Lady Evangels 17-4 in the final 4:49 of the first period to take a 43-36 lead into the break.
MACU put in the first eight points of the second period to briefly regain the advantage. Sophomore Angeleigh Davis finally ended the WBU scoring draught with a basket in the paint at the 13:55 mark. Alex Williams hit her only three-pointer of the game on the next Wayland possession, and Raymond's two free throws made it 50-44 Flying Queens.
The largest lead of the contest by either team came with 8:48 remaining when CeCe Williams sank a free throw to put Wayland up 59-47.
The home team worked its way back to within four with 44 seconds left on the clock, but the Queens sank all six of its free throw attempts down the stretch to secure the victory.
WBU, which hit 52 percent of its shots in the opening 20 minutes, cooled off considerably in the second half, finishing with a field goal percentage of 42 percent. The Queens were just 4-of-20 from beyond the arch, but made up the difference at the charity stripe, where they made good on 20 of their 23 attempts.
MACU won the battle of the boards, 46-38, but shot just 32 percent from the field, including 22 percent (2-for-10) from the three-point line. The Lady Evangels were 20-of-26 from the free throw line.
Davis and Aubrey Pedigo joined Raymond in double figures with 10 points each. Raymond was the WBU rebound leader with seven. Parris Price led MACU with 19 points, while Kourtni Williams posted a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 12 boards.
The Wayland women had a season-high 11 blocks in the game, led by Kirstie Edwards with four and Alex Williams with three.
Now 5-9 overall and 3-5 in conference play, the Queens face a giant task on Saturday afternoon when they take on top-ranked Oklahoma City at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars will be out for blood after dropping their first game of the season on Thursday, 88-66, to Lubbock Christian.
