Very little went according to plan for the Flying Queens on Saturday afternoon in a 67-55 home loss to Rogers State.
Coach Tory Bryant's squad was unable to find its shooting rhythm early, starting out 3-of-27 from the floor, and although they were able to stay within striking distance, Bryant believes that cold beginning proved fatal.
"When you're playing a team of Rogers' caliber, you've got to be able to make shots," Bryant said. "Teams that have more size have given us trouble all year, but we have to be able to respond."
The Wayland women did hit four of their final five shots to close the period and came back to shoot 54 percent in the second half, Bryant felt that his team did not demonstrate the characteristics that have won them games so far this season.
"Rogers really played a solid game today, so we have to give them credit," Bryant said. "The bottom line is that they were tougher and more physical than we were, and that's why they won the game."
Alex Williams led the Queens' efforts with 14 points and nine rebounds. Fellow senior Erika Raymond, who saw her playing limited due to foul trouble, added ten points and passed out a team-high three assists.
Wayland will look to rebound with two more conference games at Hutcherson Center next week.
"Southern Naz and USAO will both be tough. Even though they're struggling a bit right now, they're both still scrappy teams," Bryant said. "We've got to be ready to come in and win two games next week."
Despite Saturday's loss, Bryant has confidence that his team can still win on its own floor, hoping the girls can meet their initial goal of making the conference tournament.
"You always want to try to protect your home court, so a win on Thursday would be big," Bryant said. "We've got a lot of basketball left, but every night is going to be a battle."
The Queens will host the Crimson Storm of Southern Nazarene University on Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
