LUBBOCK, Texas --- Three individuals turned in winning performances, another school record fell, and 14 new qualifying marks were met at the Texas Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Athletic Training Center.
Senior Leandria Lee finished first in the 200-meters with a time of 24.53, improving on her previous qualifying time met last week. Junior Dewayne Booker took first place honors in the 800-meters with a time of 1:52.48, and junior Kennedy Kithuka won the Mile in a school-record time of 4:07.19. Kithuka owned the previous record of 4:08.89 which he established at the 2010 Indoor National Championships.
New qualifying standards by the Pioneer women were met by Bianca Grant (25.24) and Quanisha Holmes (25.40) in the 200-meters, and Milca Villegas (2:17.19) in the 800-meters. Villegas placed second in her race.
Holmes also improved her previous qualifying mark in the 400-meters with a time of 58.30 and Shykilia Sheppard came in second in the long jump, bettering her automatic mark of last week with a jump of 5.64 meters (18-03.25).
In addition, senior Latanya Nation ran a personal best 8.17 in the 55-meter hurdles,
The Pioneer men had strong performances in the 400-meters, the 600-yards, the 800-meters, and the Mile.
In the 400, juniors Durawn Howard and Gregory Turner finished third and fourth with automatic qualifying times of 47.95 and 48.07 respectively, and senior Jerry-Lee Davis met the automatic standard with his time of 48.34.
Sophomore Lorenzo Dolphus, Booker, and junior Jarrod Morris all met the automatic mark in the 600-yards. Dolphus ran a 1:10.84 to finish third, Booker crossed the finish line in fourth place with a time of 1:10.85, and Morris was sixth in 1:11.38.
Morris finished right behind Booker in the 800-meters in a time of 1:52.76. The times of both Booker and Morris are the second and third fastest in Pioneer history and improved the previous qualifying marks set by both athletes last week.
WBU men were 1-2-3-4 in the Mile. Finishing behind Kithuka were Edward Taragon (4:17.18) in second, Hildon Boen in third (4:17.36) and Jordan Valle in fourth (4:25.16). Taragon and Boen both met the automatic qualifying standard for the first time in the event.
Boen also qualified for the first time in the 1000-meters with his third place finish. The junior ran a 2:28.36. Senior Victor Lemay met the provisional standard with a time of 2:32.49 in the race.
