Alex Williams posted her fifth double-double of the season on Thursday evening at Hutcherson Center, but the Flying Queens couldn't overcome a late run by #16 Southern Nazarene in the 77-71 loss.
Williams scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in the contest which featured six ties and 12 lead changes. The WBU women held a 64-62 lead with 4:48 left when SNU took off on a 9-0 run over the next two minutes.
The Queens managed to come back to get within two, 73-71, with 53 seconds remaining on a traditional three-point play by CeCe Williams, followed by a jumper by Alex Williams. WBU was unable to convert any of its final four opportunities down the court, however, and the Storm went 4-for-4 from the free throw line to get the final margin of victory.
The Wayland women had their best game of the year from the charity stripe, hitting their first 16 attempts. The Queens finished 18-of-19. The visitors also had 17 more attempts at the line, getting 22 points off 24 WBU fouls.
Another key difference in the game came on the three-point line where the Storm hit half of their attempts (3-of-6) in the final 20 minutes. The Queens put in just 3-of-12 in the game, including 1-of-5 in the second period.
The inside game was almost a dead heat. Both teams got 28 points in the paint, and SNU had a miniscule 40-39 advantage on the boards.
Jessen Tucker finished the game with 12 points. CeCe Williams added 11 points and a team-high five assists, and Erika Raymond also hit the double digit mark in scoring with 10. Aubrey Pedigo recorded a career-high 10 rebounds.
SNU's Oumoul Thiam led all scorers with 28 points. The Storm improved to 16-5 overall and 10-3 in conference.
The Queens (6-12, 4-8) look to end their four-game home stand with a win on Saturday against the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma. The Drovers dropped an 89-49 decision to Lubbock Christian on Thursday to fall to 5-15 overall and 2-11 in conference play.
