Records fell almost as fast as the wind blew at Wilder Field on Thursday evening as the Pioneers exploded for 17 runs in the first inning on their way to a 28-8 win over College of Santa Fe.
The first record of the night fell early in the bottom of the first when Brett Cook crossed home plate with the 178th run scored of his career, a new Wayland record. Before the inning was over, the senior second baseman had singled twice and doubled once to break the school's all-time hits mark with 232.
Ben Seymore's three-run triple in the bottom of the fifth scored the 27th and 28th runs of the contest for Wayland, a new single game mark, breaking the old record of 26 set in April of 2006 against St. Gregory's. The Pioneers also established a new single-game RBI mark, knocking in 25 runs against the Prairie Dogs.
CSF jumped on the board first with a solo home run off the bat of lead-off hitter Levi Josewski, but the lead was short-lived as WBU belted out three long balls among its 11 hits in the bottom half of the inning. Brett Sheppard had two homers in the inning, including a grand slam in his first at bat; Pedro Gomez belted out a two-run shot two batters later; and Franky Busani had a three-run blast the second time through the order.
After wasting Gomez' lead-off triple in the third, the Pioneers got two more long balls in the fourth. Busani hit a solo shot with two outs, and then after a base hit by Sheppard, Keith Martin ripped one over the fence in right center field that went three houses deep down Wayland Street.
The Prairie Dogs picked up another lead-off home run in the top of the fifth by Josewski, and then scored four more with two outs on three singles and a three-run homer to right by Eduardo Acosta.
Once again Wayland answered, this time with eight runs. Seymore picked up a one-out single through the left side, Calvin Bass recorded a base hit through the right side, and then after pinch hitter Javier Garcia walked, Courtney Williams hit a two-run single to left. Garcia scored on Busani's base hit, and Sheppard forced a pitching change with his fourth hit and sixth and seventh RBI of the contest.
Todd Jeffress picked up the win, his third of the season, striking out eight batters in 4-2/3 innings of work. The eight K's gave the senior 301 for his career, the first Pioneer to reach the 300 strikeout plateau. Relievers Brett Swett and Jason Kimzey combined to get the final seven outs, allowing just two hits and picking up three more K's.
The Pioneers improved to 30-10 on the season, while College of Santa Fe falls to 4-32. The two teams complete the three-game series with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at noon.
