The Wayland Baptist Pioneer baseball team finished up its series at the University of Texas-Brownsville with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, 3-0 and 12-2.

Saturday's first game was a true pitcher's duel.  WBU's Todd Weldon used a dominating fastball to overpower the UTB hitters.  The junior from Carlsbad struck out 11 batters and allowed just two hits in the shutout.  He was aided by a great defensive play in the fourth when Josh Lucas made a diving play down the line behind first to rob Scorpion lead-off hitter Jorge Camorlinga of at least a double.  UTB's Scott Price roped a double to right center in the next at bat.

UT-Brownsville's Danny Gidora kept the Pioneer hitters off balance with a variety of off-speed pitchers through the first five innings.  WBU finally manufactured a run in the top of the six when Cook led off with an infield single, moved to second on Michael Prell's groundout to the right side, and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  With two outs, Franky Busani got the run across the plate with a single through the right side.

The Pioneers got two insurance runs in the seventh when Marcus Limon struck out but reached first on a passed ball.  He went to second on Eddie Allen's sac bunt and scored on a throwing error by the Scorpion second baseman.  Brett Cook hit a RBI single to right center to score pinch runner Ben Seymore for the game's final run.

Junior reliever Brett Swett came in after Weldon surrendered his second hit of the game to lead off the bottom of the seventh.  Swett induced two fly outs and a ground out to earn his first save of the season.

Trevor Stringer picked up the win in game four of the series.  The sophomore from Lubbock went four innings, giving up one unearned run on two hits.  Limon saw his first action on the mound in the fifth.  He recorded two strikeouts.

Lucas had three RBI in the game on a single, a double and a sacrifice fly.  Scott Keane hit a one-run single, and Allen posted two hits.  The Pioneers were helped out by a porous Scorpion defense that committed six errors.

The Pioneers head south again this weekend for a doubleheader in Austin on Friday against Huston-Tillotson University.  On Saturday, WBU takes on Mount Mercy College of Iowa for two games, also in Austin.
