Shawnee, Okla.---The Wayland Baptist women's and men's track teams both came away with runner-up honors at the 2009 Sooner Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships Saturday. The Pioneer women had 187 points, while the men tallied 125. Host Oklahoma Baptist swept the conference titles.
The meet was delayed 30 minutes two different times due to lightning in the area, and most of the events took place in various stages of rainy weather, according to Pioneer head coach Brian Whitlock.
"It wasn't a good day for a track meet. It rained almost all day, although I think it was probably at its worst during the women's 1500. It was like a monsoon during that race."
Despite the conditions, the Pioneers were able to break one meet record, one school record, and reach four new automatic qualifying standards.
Sophomore Kimberly Smith won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Smith's time of 11.57 established a new meet record, breaking the mark of 11.71 that she set last year.
"Kim had two good times on a cold, wet day. Her split in the 4x4 was also one of her best. She is running about as well as she has since she's been here right now."
Bianca Grant and Keliesha Ross finished second and fourth, respectively in the 100. Grant improved her previous automatic qualifying standard with a 12.16, while Ross reached the "A" standard for the first time this season with a time of 12.24.
Caroline Karunde, who accumulated 36-1/2 points on the day, set a new school mark in winning the 3000-meter Steeplechase, an event she has never competed in before. The sophomore automatically qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Championships in the event with a time of time of 11:02.91. Karunde also won the 5000-meters (18:00.72), finished second in the 1500-meters (4:56.41), and was third in the 800-meters (2:18.22).
The other new automatic qualifier for the Pioneer women was Latanya Nation, who won the triple jump with a hop, skip and jump of 11.50 meters. Nation, last year's Most Valuable Female Athlete, finished the day with 34-1/2 points. She won the conference championship in the 100-meter hurdles (14.91) for the second straight year, had a fifth place finish in the 100-meter dash (12.39), and was runner-up in the long jump (5.44m).
Joining Smith, Karunde and Nation as SAC Champions in individual events were Purity Biwott in the 800- and 1500-meter runs, and Grant in the Long Jump (5.57m). The Pioneer women also won the 4x100 and 4x800-meter relays. Smith, Nation, Grant and Ross took the 4x1 with a time of 47.30, while Biwott, Karunde, Elva Pedroza and Katie Roland ran the 4x8 in 9:39.65.
Other point producers for the Wayland women were Leandria Lee (3rd - 25.75) and Ross (4th - 25.77) in the 200-meters; Pedroza in the 1500-meters (4th - 5:01.79); Roland in the Steeplechase (6th - 12:27.74); KaPrisha Henderson in the long jump (3rd - 4.96m); Grant in the Triple Jump (3rd - 11.13m); and Chantell Manzone in the Discus (4th - 118-09) and the Hammer (5th - 128-02).
On the men's side, two Pioneers earned conference championship honors in field events. Brandon Mansfield won the Shot Put competition with a throw of 45-07, while Lee Prevost was the winner in the triple jump, taking the title with a jump of 12.91 meters.
Other point producers in the field events included Tito Benson in the high jump (6th - 1.68m); Bradley Sell in the Pole Vault (6th - 14-06.00); and Jeff Coleman in the Shot Put (5th - 36-05), Discus (5th - 122-10) and Hammer (155-09).
On the track, Jerry-Lee Davis and Prevost both turned in good times in the 200-meters. Davis improved upon his previous qualifying mark with a 21.50 to finish second, while Prevost came in fourth with a new automatic qualifying time of 21.66.
Prevost and senior Dominic Palmer got points in the 100-meters. Prevost came in third with a time of 10.88, while Palmer was right behind him with a 10.90 to finish fourth.
Palmer also scored points in the 200-meters (6th - 22.06), in the Long Jump (4th - 6.32), and in the Triple Jump (3rd - 12.83).
Sophomore Caleb McLean was the runner-up in the 400-meters with a time of 48.76, while Davis finished 5th in 49.38. Both of them were also a part of the second place 4x100-meter relay team (41.97), along with Prevost and Stanley Smith.
Junior Kirby Dunn, who has been bothered by a knee injury, managed to finish third in the 1500-meters (3:58.90), but was scratched in the 800-meters, a race in which he was a favorite.
Freshman Lucius Lopez came in fifth in the 1500-meters (4:05.30); Michael Sandoval scored two points with a fifth place finish in the 5000-meters (15:43.84); Antonio Perry, another freshman, put up points in the 110-meter Hurdles (4th - 16.39) and the 400-meter Hurdles (6th - 1:03.57); and senior Timmy McCune ran a 9:53.23 to finish fourth in the 3000-meter Steeplechase.
The Pioneers have one more tune-up meet, this Thursday at Texas Tech, before the National Championships, which are schedule for May 21-23.
