Five members of the Wayland Baptist University Pioneer baseball team have been named to the 2009 All-Sooner Athletic Conference team.
Second baseman Brett Cook, catcher Brett Sheppard, and outfielder Franky Busani earned First Team honors for their performances on the field this season, while Todd Weldon and Todd Jeffress were Second Team honorees.
A senior from Kearny, Ariz., Cook leads the Pioneers and is second in the conference in hitting with a .485 average. He has broken the school record in hits (100) and runs scored (80) this season, and is among the NAIA top three in each of those categories. Cook, a three-year letterwinner, is the WBU all-time leader in hits, runs scored, and doubles, and is second in career home runs.
Cook, who was a 1st team selection a year ago, was also selected as the 2009 SAC Gold Glove winner at second base.
Another repeat performer on the All-Conference squad, Sheppard is second on the WBU team in hitting with a .420 average. He has hit seven doubles, eight homers and 41 RBI despite missing the first 14 games of the season with an injury.
Sheppard, a senior from Tucson, Ariz., has thrown out nine baserunners this spring and has a fielding percentage of .990.
Busani has a .387 batting average with 21 home runs and 77 RBI, both new Pioneer season records. A senior rightfielder from Mesa, Ariz., he has also hit 11 doubles and has a .785 slugging percentage.
Weldon, a junior from Carlsbad, NM, leads Wayland with 11 wins so far in 2009. He established a new strikeout record with 117 K's, and is fourth in the NAIA with 12.89 stikeouts per nine innings.
A two-time All-Conference selection as a starting pitcher, Jeffress, a senior from Plainview, was selected for his play in the outfield this spring. He is second on the team with 16 home runs, and is hitting .349 with nine doubles, a triple and 49 runs batted in.
The remainder of the First Team All-Conference infield includes Oklahoma City's Brent Weaver at first base, Southern Nazarene shortstop Nick Spears and Lubbock Christian's Ross Blondin at third, with Josh Collazo of Oklahoma Baptist as a utility infielder. Matt Powell of SNU is the other catcher.
Joining Busani in the outfield is Sam Mercado of SNU, Will Stramp of LCU, and Sammy Lee of Oklahoma City.
The starting pitchers are Lubbock Christian's R.L. Eisenbach, Ashur Tolliver of Oklahoma City, Nate Hammons of USAO, and Matt Morgal of Southern Naz. LCU's Jakob Cunningham is the All-SAC relief pitcher and Chris Williams of Northwestern Oklahoma State is the designated hitter.
