Trevor Stringer surrendered just two runs in 8-1/3 innings and the Pioneers got 19 hits in a 10-2 win over William Jewell College on the third day of play at the 2009 NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round.
A sophomore from Lubbock, Stringer scattered 12 hits in the game, striking out five batters, but more importantly, issuing just one walk and that was to the game's lead-off hitter.
Brett Cook led the hit parade for Wayland with three hits, including a solo home run in the third, and three RBI. Keith Martin had two hits and knocked in two. Other Pioneers that produced runs were Franky Busani, Todd Jeffress, Scott Keane, Pedro Gomez and Michael Prell. Catcher Brett Sheppard got the only other extra base hit, a double to left in the first.
William Jewell, a member of the Heart of America Athletic Conference located in Liberty, Mo. and the tournament's fourth seed, got on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning. WBU responded by scoring at least one run in six of the final seven innings.
Sophomore Corey Weldon got the last two outs of the contest, coming on in relief of Stringer.
The Pioneer victory sets up the fifth meeting of the season and second of the tournament with Lubbock Christian University. If LCU wins, the Chaparrals advance to the 2009 Avista NAIA World Series. If Wayland wins, it forces an "if necessary" game to be played Friday afternoon at 1:00.
