Four Pioneers were honored at the team's end-of-season dinner held Saturday. Senior Brett Cook was named Batting Champion and co-Most Valuable Player, along with Franky Busani. Marcus Limon picked up the award for Most Valuable Pitcher, and Calvin Bass was presented the Coaches' Award.
Cook had a .473 batting average and set new season records for most runs scored (88) and most hits (107). Busani batted .380 on the season and broke the WBU mark for home runs (23) and RBI (84).
Limon, who led the NAIA in strikeouts per nine innings (14.74), had a 5-2 record with a team-high three saves and a team-best 3.58 ERA.
The WBU baseball team completed the most successful season in school history on Friday, falling one game short of its first-ever NAIA World Series appearance. The Pioneers finished with a record of 43-15 and were ranked 18th in the final NAIA Coaches Poll and 14th in Boyd's World Iterative Strength Ratings.
Twenty-three school records were tied or broken during the 2009 season. The 43 wins tied the mark of a year ago, the 15 losses established a new record for fewest losses, and the .741 winning percentage ranks first.
Among the season records to fall were most runs scored (561), most home runs (119), most RBI (513), highest batting average (.352) and highest slugging percentage (.616) and fewest errors (79).
The pitching staff set new marks for most shutouts (8) and most strikeouts (509).
The Pioneer hitters also established new individual game records for most runs scored (28 vs. College of Santa Fe), most hits (26 vs. ENMU), most RBI (25 vs. College of Santa Fe), and the pitchers got the record for most strikeouts in a game (18 vs. ENMU).
Cook and Busani were just two among several Pioneers who added their names to the WBU recordbook. Limon tied a record for most strikeouts in a game with 14 against Lubbock Christian in a National Championship Opening Round game. Todd Weldon broke the record for strikeouts in a season with 120 and tied the record for shutouts in a season with three, while Todd Jeffress again tied the mark for home runs in a game with three.
Cook became the Wayland all-time leader in runs scored (209), hits (269), doubles (50), batting average (.426) and slugging percentage (.731). He is also third in at bats (632), tied for fifth in triples (10), second in homers (41), tied for fifth in walks (79), and fifth in RBI (152).
Jeffress, who came into the year already holding the career pitching records for wins, games started, innings pitched and shutouts, took over the top spot in strikeouts (333), as well. He is also among the top five in ERA (3rd - 4.84), mound appearances (tied for 3rd - 74), and complete games (tied for 2nd - 18). At the plate, Jeffress is fourth in games played (196) and tied for third in home runs (28).
In just his sophomore season, Eddie Allen has moved to the top of the list for career sacrifices (25). Weldon's three shutouts in his first year as a Pioneer ties him for third all-time, and Keith Martin's 27 career home runs puts him in a tie for fourth.
The Pioneers reached the 500 win plateau during the 2009 season and moved ever closer to the .500 mark in wins and losses with a 517-519-3 record over the past 18 seasons.
