Pt. Lookout, Mo.---The Wayland Baptist volleyball team got its new season off to a great start, winning all four of its matches over the weekend at Mazzio's Tournament, hosted by College of the Ozarks.
The Pioneers took care of William Woods University in four sets (22-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-17) and College of the Ozarks in five (14-25, 26-24, 25-16, 21-25, 15-12) on Friday.
Saturday's first match, against Harris Stowe State University, took less than an hour to complete with the WBU women taking it in three (25-8, 25-11, 25-11). It took four sets to defeat William Jewell College in the final match of the tournament for the Pioneers. <More info on Saturday's play later.>
Sophomore Sabrina Davis led the way for WBU in the first match of the weekend with 14 kills and two blocks. The rightside hitter from Amarillo had a hitting percentage of .500 with just one error. Junior setter Anika Voigt dished up 43 assists, while Staci Wilt recorded six service aces.
On the defensive side, junior Desiree Luevano had a team-high 21 digs, Voigt came up with 18, and junior newcomer Whitney Bryant posted 14 digs.
Another sophomore, Kimberli Harger, took the lead in the contest against College of the Ozarks, getting a 20-20 doubleheader with 20 kills and 20 digs. She also recorded 2.5 blocks. Jennifer Wyatt also hit the double figure mark in kills wtih 10.
Luevano picked up 20+ digs for the second straight contest with 27. Wilt had another six aces, and Davis registered three blocks.
Wayland coach Jim Giacomazzi was pleased with his team's overall performance.
"The first day was a whole lot like I expected. There were moments of brilliance, followed by moments that show why we still need a lot of practice.
"Overall, we're looking good. Our court awareness needs some work, but that will come with competition, and although the competition was good here, it is about to get a whole lot better real quick."
The Pioneers return to the court on Friday, Sept. 11, with three matches during the Lady Chap Classic. They will play two games on Friday in Lubbock, and then come home on Saturday with a contest against Texas Wesleyan University at 5 p.m.
