The Wayland Baptist cross country teams finally got back in action on Friday afternoon in Lubbock at the Texas Tech Open. Last week's scheduled competition at Texas A&M was rained out. The Pioneer men tied for third in the men's race, while injuries and illness forced the women to run with just three athletes.
The Texas Tech men won the meet with 38 points, followed by South Plains College (84), then the Pioneers and ENMU, both with 100 points. There were 12 teams in the field.
Hildon Boen paced the WBU in the 8-Kilometer race in 11th place at 26:13.93, followed by Kirby Dunn in 14th at 26:38.41. Michael Sandoval was 17th in 26:46, Timmy McCune was 34th in 27:36, and Lucius Lopez took 41st in 28:00.38.
Also representing the Pioneer was Victor Lemay in 52nd place at 28:24.06; Jarrod Morris was 53rd in 28:28.59, and JohnKeith was 56th in 28:35.85.
Senior Diana Gutierrez placed 17th in the women's 5-Kilometer race with a time of 20:25.93, while freshmen Catherine Luebner was 20th in 20:39.11 and Milca Villegas was 24th in 20:56.26.
Next week, the Pioneers host the 5th Annual Pioneer Road Race which begins Saturday morning, Sept. 26. The race, which is open to the public consists of a 5K or a One-Mile Fun Run/Walk, begins at 8:30 from Hilliard Field.
