The Pioneer volleyball team began their two-game trip to Shawnee, Okla. in fine fashion, taking a three-set sweep over a road-weary St. Gregory's, 25-17, 25-17, 25-13 on Friday.
Although Wayland was the visiting team in the contest and had a five hour bus trip this morning, it was SGU that had the longer ride. The Cavaliers were under the impression that this weekend's matches against WBU and Lubbock Christian were in Texas, and so got almost to Amarillo early Friday afternoon before learning that the contests were, in fact in Shawnee. The team was forced to turn around and retrace the long four hour ride back in the opposite direction, just making it to their own gymnasium in time for the scheduled 7:00 match.
Kimberli Harger, Desiree Luevano and Analicia Estrada each had nine kills in the contest. Harger, who had an attack percentage of .357, also contributed nine digs, and posted a career high six blocks to score a game-high 14.5 points. Estrada's nine kills came on 14 attempts without an error for an attack percentage of .643. She also recorded two blocks and scored 11 points.
Setter Anika Voigt passed out 32 assists and had a match-high 15 digs. Alissa Mitchell also reached the double-figure mark in digs with 10, and Sabrina Davis and Jennifer Wyatt each helped out on three blocks.
Next up for the WBU netters, who improve to 15-3 on the season and 3-2 in conference play, is a showdown with Oklahoma Baptist University. The Lady Bison, 18-6 and 2-3, fell to Lubbock Christian on Friday evening in four sets.
