Lubbock, Tex.---Lubbock Christian came out firing on all cylinders while the Pioneer seemed to be in slow motion in an important Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball match on Monday evening at LCU's Rip Griffin Center. The #18 Lady Chaps took care of business quickly, sweeping the Wayland women in three-sets, 25-12, 25-21 and 25-15.
The Pioneers, many of whom are dealing with the tragic death of a former teammate over the weekend, just couldn't get things going from the start. With the scored tied at three, WBU made five straight hitting errors to give LCU all the ammunition it would need.
The home team finished the set with 17 kills and committed just one attack error. On the other side of the net, Coach Jim Giacomazzi's team had seven kills and eight errors in the opening set.
Wayland made a game of it in the second set, staying within two until, with the score 20-18 in favor of LCU, the Pioneers gave up four straight on a kill, two blocks and another hitting error.
Junior middle Jennifer Wyatt led WBU with six kills and two blocks in the contest. Anika Voigt and Kimberli Harger had five kills each, and Harger recorded a team-high 16 digs.
Giacomazzi's squad gets a chance to recover with a ten-day break. The Pioneers don't get back on the court again until Oct. 23 when Oklahoma Baptist comes to Hutcherson Center.
