The Wayland Baptist baseball team's annual Blue/Gold Series got underway on Sunday afternoon in front of approximately 75 fans who came out on a beautiful fall afternoon to get an advance look at the 2010 Pioneers.

The Pioneers will play four more games this week to wrap up their fall season: Monday evening at 6:00, Wednesday at 5:00, Thursday at 6:00, and Friday at 3:00.

Sophomore pitcher Cory Weldon got the 7-1 win for the Gold team in Sunday's opener. The younger Weldon went five innings, surrendering one run on five hits. He struck out four and walked one.

Senior second baseman Michael Prell went three-for-three for the Gold team with two runs scored and one RBI. Ryan Mungia, a freshman third baseman from Hereford, Tex., had a solo home run, and junior catcher Kevin Hennessy hit a run-scoring double for coaches David Purcell and Todd Jeffress.

Returning Pioneers Eddie Allen and Pedro Gomez got the other two hits, both singles, for the Gold.

Aaron Pate and Brett Swett worked the final two innings. Pate, a junior from Carlsbad, NM, gave up one hit and struck out one in the sixth, while Swett gave up two hits and a walk, but did not allow a run and struck out one.

Todd Weldon took the loss for the Blue team, which is being coached by Steven Quezada, Brett Cook and Tommy McMillan. The elder Weldon allowed four hits and struck out six batters in his five innings of work, but walked five. Only one of the four runs the senior All-Conference pitcher allowed was earned, however, as his defense made three costly errors behind him.

Freshman Alfredo Delgado from Lubbock's Trinity Christian High School pitched the final two innings in relief of Todd Weldon, giving up two runs on two hits with one strikeout.

Junior outfielder Brian Embery, a sophomore transfer from Emporia, Kan., went two-for-three with two doubles for the Blue team. Josh Lucas knocked in the only run when he and Embery hit back-to-back doubles in the third.

Jacob Hinojosa, Calvin Bass, Johnathan Torres, Oscar Rivera and JT Huckabay also picked up hits for the Blue team, which left eight runners on base.
