Lubbock, Tex.---Two school records were broken and 15 automatic qualifying standards were met by the Wayland Baptist men and women during their first meet of the 2010 Indoor Track and Field season. Senior Kydia Echols, who was forced to sit out last season with an injury, and freshman Kennedy Kithuka both won their events and established new school marks while competing at the Texas Tech Open on Saturday at the Activity Training Center.

Echols' time of 1:23.64 in the 600-yard run broke the old, hand-held record of 1:24.0, while Kithuka took over two seconds off the previous WBU mark in the Mile with a time of 4:09.71. Other event winners for the Pioneers on Saturday were junior Kimberly Smith in the 55-meter dash (6.91), freshman Myran Roundtree in both the long jump (24-05) and the triple jump (46-10.25), sophomore Bianca Grant in the long jump (19-02), junior Latanya Nation in the triple jump (39-09.25), and junior Brandon Mansfield in the weight throw (54-01.75). All the WBU event winners also met automatic qualifying marks.

"It was a great way to start the season," said Wayland head coach Brian Whitlock, following the meet. "Both these teams are absolutely loaded with talent. I'm real excited about the possibilities ahead of us."

One other record was set at the meet. The Texas Tech women's 4x800 meter relay team set a new school and facility record with a time of 8:57.70. That time broke the old mark that was set last year by the Wayland 4x800 team. Ironically, two members from that WBU team competed this year for Tech, juniors Caroline Karunde and Purity Biwott. This year, the Wayland women finished behind the Lady Raiders with an automatic qualifying time of 9:41.01. Echols, Milca Villegas, Jennifer Secrest, and Elva Pedroza represented WBU on Saturday. Villegas and Secrest are both freshmen, while Pedroa is a senior.

The Wayland men's 4x800 team also finished second to a team from Tech. Senior Kirby Dunn, Kithuka, and sophomores Mario Scott and Tito Benton ran a 7:54.92 to automatically qualify for the NAIA Indoor Championships in March.

The remaining automatic qualifiers representing Wayland were Nation in the long jump (18-09.75 - 2nd pl) and the 55-meter hurdles (8.47 - 6th pl), sophomore Jerry-Lee Davis in the 400-meters (48.35 - 2nd pl), junior Caleb McLean in the 400-meters (48.36 - 3rd pl.), and Secrest in the 600-yard run (1:28.35 - 3rd pl.).

Five provisional qualifying times were also turned in by the Pioneers: Grant in the 55-meters (7.35 - 3rd pl.), sophomore Leandria Lee in the 55-meters (7.41 - 5th pl.) and the 200-meters (25.91 - 4th pl.), sophomore Lee Prevost in the 55-meters (6.48 - 4th pl.), Dunn in the Mile (4:20.20 - 2nd pl.), and sophomore Mario Scott in the 600-yard run (1:13.36 - 5th pl.).
