LUBBOCK, TEX --- The Wayland Baptist track and field teams had another successful meet over the weekend at the two-day Texas Tech Invitational as four more school records fell and eight new automatic and five new provisional standards were met.

Freshman Kennedy Kithuka continued his ambush of the Wayland recordbook. Kithuka, who set a new mark in the Mile Run last week, won the 3000-meters in a time of 8:12.83, taking more than eight seconds off the previous WBU record in the event.

Senior Kirby Dunn picked up the second school record of his career on Saturday with a second place finish in the 800-meters. Dunn ran a 1:51.75 to take just over one minute off the old mark established in 1987. Dunn already owns the Pioneer record in the 1000-meters.

The other new individual recordholder is also no stranger to the WBU recordbook. Junior sprinter Kimberly Smith, who already holds four individual Pioneer records, took .04 off her previous mark in the 55-meters on Saturday, winning the event in a time of 6.80, which is also a new record for the TTU Activities Training Center. Smith won the 200-meters on Friday with an automatic qualifying time of 24.39.

Also establishing a new school record was the men's Distance Medley Relay team. Dunn, Mario Scott, Hildon Boen and Kithuka finished second in Friday's DMR with a time of 9:55.58. The old mark was 10:04.9 set in 1987.

Other new automatic qualifiers for the Pioneers include freshman Edward Taragon, who won the 5000-meters with a time of 15:14.72, and Keliesha Ross, who ran a 7.21 in the 55-meters. Both the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay teams also hit automatic qualifying standards. The men's 4x4, consisting of Andre Hamilton, Jerry-Lee Davis, Fernando Barrio, and Caleb McLean placed fifth with a time of 3:16.47, while the women ran a 3:55.45 to finish fourth. Representing the women's 4x4 were Smith, Kydia Echols, Krystal Noggler and Leandria Lee.

Two Wayland athletes improved on their previous automatic qualifying marks over the weekend. Brandon Mansfield placed fifth in the weight throw with a heave of 16.98 meters (55-08.50), while Myrun Roundtree went 14.71 meters (48-03.25) in the triple jump for an eighth place finish.

Latanya Nation's 8.53 in the 55-meter hurdles and Echols' 1:25.65 in the 600-yard run were also automatic times, but neither bettered their time from a week ago.

New provisional qualifiers representing Wayland were Milca Villegas in the 1000-meters (3:04.32); McLean (21.76) and Davis (21.81) in the 200-meters; Bianca Grant in the 55-meters (7.32); Roundtree in the 55-meters (6.45); and Hamilton in the 400-meters (49.19).

The Pioneers will take a week off before returning to Tech on Feb. 6 for the Texas Tech Open.
