BROWNSVILLE, TEX---The Wayland Baptist Pioneers opened the NAIA baseball season for the third straight season with a doubleheader on Saturday against the University of Texas-Brownsville. The Pioneers fell in the first game 4-1, but came back to win the nightcap over the Scorpions by a score of 2-1.

In the opener, WBU shortstop Eddie Allen had three of his team's six hits and the lone RBI. Down 4-1 in the fourth, Oscar Rivera hit a two-out single to left. Scott Keane advanced courtesy runner Calvin Bass to second on a ground ball that was bobbled by the UTB third baseman. Allen followed with a single to center field that scored Bass.

Michael Prell and Brian Embery had the other hits for the Pioneers. Marcus Limon took the loss, giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits and three walks in three innings of work. The junior from Lubbock struck out three. Junior transfer Aaron Pate did a good job in relief, allowing just one hit in his three innings.

Pedro Gomez swung the hot bat and Todd Weldon earned his first win of the season for WBU in the second game. Gomez went 2-for-3 in the contest with a RBI double and a triple. The senior from Puerto Rico also scored a run.

Weldon gave up a lead-off triple to start the game, but held the Scorpions in check from that point. The senior from Carlsbad, NM, gave up just one more hit and struck out six batters without surrendering a walk. Senior Brett Swett came in to retire the order in the seventh to pick up his first save of the year.

The Pioneers tied the game in the fourth when Gomez hit a two out triple to deep right center and scored on an error by the UTB third baseman off the bat of leftfielder Johnathan Torres. Josh Lucas scored the winning run in the top of the sixth after drawing a lead off walk and scoring on Gomez's double off the wall in center.

Prell, Kevin Hennessey, Embery and Keane had the other hits, all singles, for Wayland.

The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Live Video and Live Stats will once again be available for both games.
