
PLAINVIEW, TEX---Jessica Walker scored 17 points and Erika Raymond put in 16 to lead the Flying Queens to a 66-62 victory over John Brown University on Friday afternoon at Hutcherson Center. With the win, the Queens improve to 12-8 on the season and 7-6 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
John Brown scored the first five points of the contest, but Walker hit seven straight to give Wayland the 7-5 lead. After the Lady Golden Eagles knotted it back up, the Queens regained the lead on a field goal by Staci Murphree.
The WBU women extended the advantage to 31-18 with 4:35 left in the period, but the visitors ended the half with a 10-2 run that closed the gap to 33-28 at the intermission.
A free throw by Shamon Doss and a bucket by Raymond to start the second period put Wayland back up by eight. JBU responded by scoring the next nine points to go up 39-36.
The lead changed hands numerous times over the next eight minutes. The Lady Golden Eagles took a six point lead, their largest of the game, at the seven minute mark, but three straight three-pointers, one by Walker sandwiched between two by Raymond, gave WBU a 61-60 advantage with 2:35 remaining.
JBU's Amber Vogts hit a basket to make it 62-61 on the next possession, but Staci Murphree hit the first of two free throws to tie it back up at 62. Freshman Aubrey Pedigo was fouled after pulling down a big defensive rebound with 30 seconds left, and sank both of her shots to give the Queens the lead for good, and Megan Coats finished the scoring with two more shots from the charity stripe.
John Brown won the battle of the boards, 39-33, and outscored Wayland 24-20 in the paint, but the Queens put in one more three-pointer, and hit 15-of-22 from the free throw line. The visitors went to the line 15 times, putting in 12.
Doss was the leading rebounder for WBU with 10. Walker had a team-high five assists and six steals. Coats also scored in double figures with 10 points. Pedigo had eight points and seven boards.
Emily Ortiz led JBU with 14 points.
The Queens return to action on Saturday afternoon with a game against #25 Rogers State University beginning at 1 p.m.
