Shawnee, Okla.--- Shooting woes have plagued the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens for the past month, but things could not have been much worse than they were in Thursday night's 72-51 loss to #4 Oklahoma Baptist.
The Queens hit just six of their first 33 shots (18.2%) and finished up shooting a season-low 25 percent for the contest. The WBU women managed to stay in the game until very late thanks to good defensive pressure that forced 27 Lady Bison turnovers.
OBU never trailed in the game and had a 32-17 lead after the opening 20 minutes of play. Although they never could cut the margin to single digits, the Queens did get within 11 several times. At one point in the latter half of the contest, Wayland made it 55-44, but a 16-0 Lady Bison run spoiled any thoughts of a comeback.
Erika Raymond and Megan Coats had ten points each for WBU, which is now 13-9 overall and 8-7 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. Jessica Walker added nine points and had a team-high three assists. Jessi Howard led the team in rebounding with six.
Coats and Staci Murphree got the only three-pointers of the contest for the Queens, while the home team put in eight treys, four of which came off the hands of Val Siemens, who had 12 points and did not miss on any of her attempts from beyond the arc.
The Wayland women had a total of 13 steals in the game and scored 24 points off OBU turnovers. Walker, Raymond and Coats had three steals a piece.
The Lady Bison(19-2, 12-1) won the rebounding battle, 51-35. The Queens pulled down 18 offensive boards and scored seven second chance points. OBU had nine second chance points off of 15 offensive rebounds.
WBU will attempt to get back on the right track with a game Saturday at St. Gregory's University (8-13, 3-10). The Cavaliers were 77-58 losers to Lubbock Christian on Thursday.
