Lubbock, Tex. --- The Wayland Baptist track and field team had another good meet on Saturday at the Texas Tech Open, with two more school records broken, two more TTU Athletic Training Center records set, and five new automatic qualifying standards met.

Junior sprinter Kimberly Smith and freshman distance runner Kennedy Kithuka continued their assault on both the school recordbook and the ATC recordbook. Smith took .04 off her own WBU and ATC records in the 55-meters, crossing the finish line first in a time of 6.76. She set the previous mark of 6.80 two weeks ago.

Kithuka turned in what was probably the most astounding race of the meet, lapping the entire field in the 5000-meters and finishing up with an unbelievable time of 13:54.54. That took almost a minute and a half off the previous ATC record, broke the WBU record by almost half a minute, and is a good enough to automatically qualify for the NCAA Division I Championships.

Although not recordbreaking performances, senior middle distance runner Kirby Dunn also had an impressive meet, winning both the Mile and the 1000-meters and meeting automatic standards. Dunn ran a 4:11.21 in the Mile, the third best time turned in this season in the NAIA, and then about 90 minutes later, finished the 1000-meters in a time of 2:28.98, which is also third best so far this year.

The other new automatic marks were met by sophomore Bianca Grant in the triple jump (11.32m / 37-01.75) and the 55-meters (7.30).

Freshman Edward Taragon, who finished second in the 5000-meters, improved his previous automatic qualifying time in the 5000-meters with a 15:10.21, while Brandon Mansfield bettered his previous mark in the weight throw with a toss of 17.07m (56-00.00). Keliesha Ross ran a 7.20 in the 55-meters and Latanya Nation finished the 55-meter hurdles in 8.33 to cut more time off their marks.

New provisional qualifying performances were turned in on Saturday by Ross in the 200-meters (25.34), Kydia Echols in the 800-meters (2:18.91), Hildon Boen in the 800 (1:56.53), Catherine Leubner in the 5000-meters (18:51.10), Victory Lemay in the Mile (4:22.48), and Lee Prevost in the Triple Jump (13.95m / 45-9.25).

The Pioneer teams will split up next weekend with the sprinters traveling to Colorado Springs for the Air Force Invitational, while the distance runners will go to Norman, Okla. for the OC Eagle Invitational.
