Five members of the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens were named to the 2009-10 All-Sooner Athletic Conference team according to information released late Monday afternoon.
Sophomore Erika Raymond was awarded 2nd team honors, senior Shamon Doss was selected to the 3rd team, and two others, seniors Jessica Walker and Edite Kresa, earned honorable mention recognition. In addition, Kresa and junior Jessi Howard were chosen as Academic All-Conference honorees.
A 5-11 forward from Plainview, Raymond leads the Queens in scoring this season with a 12.8 per game average. She is second in assists with 88 and steals with 49, and pulls down 3.9 rebounds a game. In four of the five last regular season contests, Raymond scored at least 20 points, and two weeks ago at John Brown University, she set a career high with 30 points.
Doss, a 5-11 post from Silsbee, Tex., averages just over 11 points and a team-leading eight rebounds a game. She shoots 50 percent from the field, and has 26 assists and 27 steals for the Queens during her final season.
The Queens' 5-8 point guard from Bryan, Tex., Walker leads the SAC in steals (89), is second in assists (136) and is among the NAIA leaders in both categories. She averages 9.6 points and 4.1 rebounds a game for the WBU women.
Kresa suffered a season-ending knee injury after playing in just 17 games in her senior season. At the time of her injury, the 5-6 guard from Latvia was well on her way to becoming the 42nd member of the Flying Queens 1,000 Point Club, and would most likely have taken over the WBU career records in three-point shooting. Kresa was leading the conference in three-point shooting (46.3 percent), and was the Queens' scoring leader with an 11.2 points per game average.
The WBU women move into post-season play on Thursday in the opening game of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament against Lubbock Christian University. Tip-off for that game, which is being played at Sawyer Center on the campus of Southern Nazarene University, is scheduled for 9 a.m. The contest will be broadcast live on KWLD Radio (91.5 FM) and via the internet at www.wbuathletics.com with Tom Hall calling the action.
