JAMUL, Calif. --- The Pioneer men's golfers opened the spring portion of their 2009-10 schedule on Monday at the Point Loma Nazarene/Smee Builders Invitational at Steele Canyon Golf Course.
WBU, led by junior Michael Loppnow, shot a 305 in the first round, and then came back with a 296 in the afternoon for a total 601. The Pioneers are five strokes behind the leaders, host Point Loma Nazarene, in second place.
Loppnow goes into Tuesday's final round tied for second place in the individual standings, one stroke behind the leader, Ryan Ellerbrock of PLNU. Loppnow opened at par (71), but struggled during the second 18, finishing with a four-over 75, to complete the day at 146.
The other Pioneer golfers are newcomer Matthew Webb, a junior transfer from Western Texas College, who is tied for 13th (79-72 - 151), freshman Yohann Vora, who is tied for 19th (74-78 - 152), and sophomores Jonathan Elliott (tied for 21st, 81-72 - 153) and Bradley Sinnett (tied for 35th, 81-77 - 158).
The three-round tournament concludes with 18 holes that begins Tuesday morning.
