Because the sport of wrestling is unfamiliar to many in the Plainview area, the following is a brief summary of the scoring system in freestyle wrestling.

To stay within UIL regulations for all-star competitions, the format that will be used on Thursday is actually a modified freestyle format.  Each match consists of three two-minute periods.  The wrestler with the most points at the end of the match will be awarded the win, unless there is a pen (fall) or a technical fall.  A pen (fall) is awarded when a wrestler's shoulders or shoulder blades come in contact with the mat for two seconds.  At that point, the match is over.  A match is also stopped and a technical fall is awarded anytime a 15-point lead is established.

In individual match scoring, two points can be awarded for a takedown, which occurs when wrestlers are standing on their feet and one wrestler takes the other one down to the mat and has control of his/her opponent.  Two points can also be awarded for a reversal.  A reversal is when one wrestler is in a down position and is being controlled by the opponent, and the wrestler then reverses the situation whereby he/she is now the one in control.

If a wrestler being controlled by the opponent in a down position gets up and away to a neutral standing position, then he/she has executed an escape and is awarded one point.

Either two or three points are awarded for a near pin.  When a wrestler puts the opponent on his/her back for two seconds, he/she will be given two points.  If a wrestler holds the opponent on his/her back for five or more seconds, he/she will receive three points.

Penalty points may also be awarded for rules infractions such as illegal locking of hands, illegal holds, stalling, and unsportsmanlike conduct.

In cases of ties, a two minute overtime period is held, and the first points scored wins.

The match official will indicate when points are scored.  Each wrestler wears a color band around the lower leg.  The match official will have corresponding bands around each wrist.  An example:   when the wrestler wearing a red band scores a takedown, the official will raise his arm with the red band and hold up two fingers.   Next, the wrestler with the green band is charged with stalling, the official will raise the arm with the green band and make a fist.  He will then raise the arm with the red band and hold up one finger.  The wrestler in red is up 3-0.

In a dual meet, team points are determined by a number of factors.  A team is awarded three points for each match that is won by fewer than eight points.  Four points are given when there is a major decision, which is when a match is won by 8 to 14 points.   When a match is won by a technical fall (15 points), a team is awarded five points, and six points are given when a pin or fall is recorded.
