DALLAS, Tex. --- The Wayland men's golf team overcame a shaky first day by shooting a low-round 294 on the final 18-holes at the Dallas Baptist University Patriot Invitational at The Golf Club of Dallas. That effort enabled the Pioneers to climb into the top ten in the final standings.

WBU opened the tournament with a respectable 297, but stumbled badly in Monday's afternoon round, finishing up at 305. The 294 on Tuesday gave Wayland a 54-hole total of 896, good enough for tenth place. Midwestern State University defeated top-ranked Oklahoma City University in a playoff to capture the team title. MSU and OCU each shot a three-round total of 868.

Junior Matthew Webb, who joined the Pioneers at semester from Western Texas College, tied for ninth place to lead the WBU men. Webb opened with a four-over 74, came back to shoot a 72 in the second round, and completed the tourney with a one-over 71 to total a seven-over 217.

Yohann Vera, a freshman, shot a 150 (74-76-74), while junior Michael Loppnow was one shot behind with a 225 (73-80-72). Another freshman, Jimmy Lu (77-77-77-231) and sophomore Bradley Sinnett (76-82-78-236) also competed for the Pioneers.

The 16th-ranked Wayland golfers have one more tournament, next week's Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic at the Wichita (Kan.) Country Club, before the Sooner Athletic Conference Championship on April 19 and 20 in Oklahoma City.
