ARDMORE, Okla. --- Wayland Baptist's Bradley Sinnett sunk a birdie putt on the final hole of the Sooner Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship Tournament to move his team into a three-way tie for second place on Tuesday afternoon at Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club. The #13 Pioneers shot a low-round 283 on the last 18 holes, making up ten strokes on the final day of competition.
OCU, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, shot 275-274-285-834 to take its 16th SAC title, and the 13th in the last 14 years. WBU, Oklahoma Christian, and Southern Nazarene tied for second place.
The Pioneers had a 289-278-283-850, second-ranked Oklahoma Christian carded 281-280-289-850, and eighth-ranked Southern Nazarene turned in a 284-273-293-850 on the par-70, 6,576-yard course.
Scores went up as pin placements were put in more challenging spots on the greens for the final round. Skies were clear until clouds rolled in halfway through the round. Winds were calm, while temperatures reached 72 degrees.
Sinnett, who entered Tuesday in a tie for second place in the individual standings after shooting a 70 and 65 on the first two rounds, wound up alone in second place. The sophomore had his best tournament of the year, finishing with a two-under 208 and earning All-Conference honors. OCU's Michael Palmer won the individual championship with a 203 (69-66-68).
WBU junior Michael Loppnow made the top ten, finishing in a tie for seventh place with a 71-70-70-211. Matthew Webb, a junior, just missed the top ten, tying for 11th at 75-71-69-215, and freshman Yohann Vora tied for 13th, shooting a 73-72-71-216.
Another freshman, Jimmy Lu, wrapped up his first SAC tourney with a 76-72-81-229.
In winning the conference tournament, the Stars received an automatic berth to the NAIA Championships on May 18-21 at TPC Deere Run in Silvas, Ill. Three or four more SAC teams are expected to receive at-large bids. Qualifiers for the 30-team, 156-man national-tournament field will be announced May 6.
