EDMOND, Okla. - The Wayland Baptist women's golf team heads into this week's Sooner Athletic Conference Championships ranked 16th in the NAIA. Three other teams in the conference are ranked ahead of the Pioneer women, including top-ranked Oklahoma City University which will be attempting to win its seventh consecutive conference title on Monday and Tuesday at River Oaks Golf Club.
The field for the 36-hole event also includes ninth-ranked Lubbock Christian and 11th-ranked Southern Nazarene, along with Northwestern Oklahoma State, Oklahoma Baptist and Rogers State. The conference champion picks up a spot in the NAIA Championships on May 25-28 at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Rapid City, S.D.
River Oaks, located at 10909 Clubhouse Road in Edmond, will feature a par-72, 5,998-yard layout. The first round begins with a shotgun start 10 a.m. Monday, then the final round happens as shotgun at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
OCU, which has won the last five NAIA Championships, has won one event this season - the Oklahoma City Star Classic on Oct. 12-13 at Lincoln Park Golf Course.
Paige Martin has been the Stars' ringleader this season, but OCU's Laura Jones is the returning SAC medalist. Wayland Baptist's top golfer, Charlotte Guilleux, who is coming off three consecutive tournament victories, is another of the individual favorites.
The Pioneer women tied LCU a week ago at a one-round dual meet held at Plainview Country Club. Guilleux shot an even par 71 on the day, coming out two strokes ahead of teammate Anye Magombe, a sophomore, and three strokes in front of the Lady Chaps' leader, Sinae Montoya.
Three freshmen Nathalia Valencia, Jennifer Perry, and Krisann Earp complete the WBU women's team.
