Both Pioneer track and field teams accumulated 13 points on the second day of the NAIA Outdoor Championships. The Wayland men took second place in the 4x800m relay and Myran Roundtree came in fourth in the long jump, while the women also took second in the 4x8 and got a fourth place finish in the 100m from Kimberly Smith.
WBU has 26 points and is in third place in the overall men's standings. Azusa Pacific, which is going for its fourth straight outdoor championship, is in 25th place with 6.33 points after two days of competition. The University of British Columbia is first with 39 points, followed closely by Concordia (Ore.) with 36.
Azusa Pacific is atop the women's standings with 32 points. Lindenwood University is second with 26, followed by the Pioneer women with 23. Oklahoma Baptist, winner of the 2010 Indoor Championships, is sixth with 20 points.
The Wayland men's 4x8 featured strong legs by Hildon Boen and Kirby Dunn, both of were coming off hard runs in the semi-finals of the open 800m just three hours earlier. The Pioneer foursome crossed the finish line in a time of 7:30.40. Jarrod Morris and Mario Scott ran the first two legs of the relay.
Roundtree's final jump of 7.35 meters or 24-1.5 earned him All-American honors and an important five points in the long jump.
Elsewhere on the track, Caleb McLean, Dunn, and Kennedy Kithuka advanced to Saturday's final rounds. McLean finished second in his heat with a 48.23 in the 400m, and Dunn's time of 1:50.31 is fourth-best entering the finals. Not surprisingly, Kithuka enters the final round with the top time in the 5000m, easily winning his heat in a time of 14:57.54.
Also moving on to the last day of competition is the men's 4x400m relay team. Andre Hamilton, Jerry-Lee Davis, Scott, and McLean ran a 3:12.47 to finish third in their heat, and the 4x100m team of Davis, Roundtree, Scott and Lee Prevost won their heat to advance with a time of 40.85.
Other competitors representing Wayland on Saturday include junior thrower Brandon Mansfield in the Shot Put; Roundtree in the Triple Jump; Timmy McCune and Michael Sandoval in the Marathon; and Davis in the 200m.
Elva Pedroza, Milca Villegas, Jennifer Secrest and Kydia Echols ran their way to a runner-up finish in the 4x8 with a time of 9:02.15. Earlier in the day, Echols reached the finals in the open 800, finishing second in her semi-final heat in 2:11.95.
In the final event on Friday, Echols, along with Villegas, Kelisha Ross and Leandria Lee combined to run a day's-best 3:45.99 in the 4x400m relay.
Smith ran an 11.88 to get the five points in the 100m, but it was the first time in her three years at Wayland that the junior sprinter failed to win an individual title. She still has a chance for a national title as part of the 4x100m relay team, however. Smith, Bianca Grant, Leandria Lee and Keliesha Ross ran a 46.06 to win their semi-final heat.
Besides the two relay events and Echols, the women could also get points on Saturday from Lee and Ross in the 200m.
"Milca had a great day today, as did Kydia," said WBU head coach Brian Whitlock, "and Jerry-Lee was key for the guys' 4x4. Tomorrow is a another big day, and we just need to stay focused. I really believe that our men are in the perfect position to win it all."
