Five members of the Wayland Baptist track and field team have been named as 2010 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes. Seniors Kirby Dunn, Kydia Echols and Keliesha Ross, along with juniors Bradley Sell and Diana Gutierrez were honored in ceremonies last Saturday at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

An eight-time NAIA All-American, Dunn is the school recordholder in two middle distance and two relay events.  He received the 2010 Roscoe Snyder Award as the top male senior athlete and was the 2009 recipient of the WBU Scholar Athlete Award.  Dunn, whose hometown is Bowie, Tex., graduated last month with a perfect 4.0 GPA in Business Administration.

Echols was the 2010 female Roscoe Snyder Award winner.  She also holds four school records and is a 13-time NAIA All-American.  A 2010 WBU graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise and Sports Science, the Harleton, Tex. native had a 3.68 GPA.

Like Echols, Ross is a 13-time NAIA All-American and a recent graduate of WBU.  She maintained a 3.66 GPA while majoring in Business Administration and was a member of two school record-breaking relay teams.  Ross hails from Arlington, Tex.

A pole vaulter from Clarendon, Tex., Sell has qualified for the NAIA Track and Field Championships once during his career at Wayland.  He is a Religion major with has a 3.7 GPA.

Gutierrez, who is from Dumas, Tex., was the 2010 WBU Female Scholar Athlete Award winner.  She is a Spanish Education major with a 3.79 GPA.

NAIA Scholar Athletes must be nominated by their head coach, be a junior or above in academic standing, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
