El Paso's Akira Pena Signs With WBU

The list of signees for the new Wayland Baptist wrestling programs continues to grow. WBU coach Johnny Cobb has added seven more wrestlers to his 2010-11 rosters, including four women and three men.

The four women are all former All-State honorees and are all from the state of Texas.  Tarah Brewer and Chelsie McMillion are both from Clear Creek High School in Houston.  Brewer took fourth place at the 2010 State Tournament in the 138-pound division, while McMillion was the fifth place winner in the 148 pound category.

Bethany Courkamp, a graduate of Amarillo High School and a transfer from Missouri Valley College, came in fourth in 2006 as a 102-pounder and fifth in the 2007 state wrestling tournament in the 110 pound class.

The fifth place finisher in the 2010 95-pound class from El Paso's El Dorado High School, Akira Pena was the 95-pound Region I Champion and a two-time District 4 title-holder.

Joey Andrist is an all-around talent from Lubbock's Estacado High School where he finished sixth at the 2010 State Tournament in the 180-pound class.  The EHS class valedictorian, Andrist was also the 2009 Class 3A All-South Plains Defensive Player of the Year and a Golden Gloves national tournament qualifier two years ago.

A three-time state qualifier from Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village, Kan., Tanner Johnson, a 141-pounder, is second on the school's all-time pins list with 64.  He was the 2009 Regional Champion and has a career record of 95-32.

Wrapping up the list if Cobb's newest signees is B.J. Sheppard, a 197-pounder from Rio Linda, Calif. who attended Sacramento City College.
