The WBU wrestling program continues to grow with the addition of 13 more student-athletes. Eight more men and five women have signed up to compete for the Pioneers beginning this fall.
Among the group of men are two former State champions, two State finalists, and four former All-State honorees. The new women's signees include three state finalists and another who earned All-State recognition.
Francisco Deleon, Paz Acosta and Bernie Gonzales are incoming freshman at Wayland. Deleon, a 240-pounder, received All-State honors at El Paso's Socorro High School; Acosta, at 133-pounds, was an All-Stater at Amarillo's Palo Duro High; and El Paso Eastwood's Bernie Gonzales was a 152-pound Regional Champion.
The other five signees are collegiate transfers. Michael Gerber won a State Championship and was a three-time State finalist and high school All-American while at Canyon's Randall High. The 157 pounder is transferring to WBU from Central Oklahoma University.
Another area product returning closer to home is Jacob Bevington who was a two-time All-State selection while at Amarillo's Tascosa High School. The 174 pound Bevington competed at Bacone University last year.
Kevin Jury, a State Champion and a State finalist in the 125-pound division at El Paso's Americas High School, comes to Wayland from Adams State College; while another 125-pounder, Albert Tapia, was a high school All-American at Christian Brothers High School in California and competed at Sacramento City Community College.
Heavyweight Andrew Harmoney returns to Texas after wrestling for the University of Sioux Falls a year ago. A graduate of Arlington High School, Harmoney totaled 84 wins in his high school varsity career, was a District Champion and State qualifier, and a two-time State Greco champion.
Ofelia Valdez and Nallely Carrillo bring collegiate experience to Coach Johnny Cobb's women's program. Valdez attended the University of New Mexico last year after a stellar career at Dallas Molina High School where she earned All-State honors three years and was a State runner-up at 97 pounds.
Carrillo signed with Cumberland University after graduating from El Dorado High in El Paso. She was a State finalist in 2009 in the 105-pound division.
State runner-ups Nichole Almanza and Lorraine Herrera, along with All-Stater Kirsten Iruegus are recent high school graduates. Almanza attended Caprock High School in Amarillo, Herrera is a product of El Paso Andress High, and Iruegus received her diploma from Hereford High School.
