Kate Trejos and Desiree Luevano combined for 25 kills and 24 digs to lead Wayland Baptist to a three-set sweep over Embry-Riddle on day two of the 2010 Coca-Cola Classic at Hutcherson Center. The Pioneers picked up their second win of the season with the 25-15, 25-13, 25-7 victory.
A junior college transfer from Bogota, Columbia, Trejos had a match-high 14 kills and got 11 digs, while Luevano continued on her torrid pace with 11 kills and 13 digs. Both had killing percentages well over .400.
As they did on Thursday, the Pioneer netters started out slow, falling behind 4-1 in the early going. They eventually pulled out in front 8-6 on a kill by Luevano, and then Jennifer Wyatt held serve for eight straight points to break it open.
In the second set, Trejos had four consecutive kills in a 12-1 WBU run. Tatiana Gonzalez held serve for ten of those points.
The Pioneers had a 9-0 run with Luevano serving in the third set to stretch a 9-6 advantage into an 18-6 lead, and then closed out the match with seven straight with Kimberli Harger at the service line.
Anika Voigt passed out 38 assists, and Jennifer Wyatt had six kills, three blocks and two service aces for WBU.
The visitors from Embry-Riddle were led by Laura DeGeorge with seven kills, and defensively Anna Martin posted a match-high 15 digs.
In other matches on Friday, #22 Lubbock Christian defeated #12 Olivet Nazarene in three sets (25-20, 25-20, 25-16), Embry-Riddle beat York College in three (25-17, 25-19, 25-22) and ONU picked up its first win of the season in a three-set match against York (25-12, 25-11, 25-16).
The final day of action at the Coke Classic begins at 9 a.m. with a match between Lubbock Christian and York College. ONU and ERAU follow at 11 a.m. Wayland takes on York at 1 p.m., and LCU and Embry-Riddle close out the day with a match at 3 p.m.
