Freshman Jordan James scored on a pass from Emarie Holland with just over two minutes left in the first overtime period to give the Wayland Baptist women a 3-2 victory over Northwood University. There was just over 200 happy fans at Hilliard Field to watch the Pioneer women, now 3-1, in action for the first time this season.
James' gamewinner was set up after senior Ashley Woodall took the ball from just beyond midfield all the way down the left sideline. Her pass across the middle was fielded by Holland who then sent it over to James down the right side of the box. It was the second goal of the season for the Gregory-Portland High School graduate.
The Pioneers got on the board first when Holland put the rebound of a shot by Corita Kraemer into the back of the net at the 8:43 mark of the game.
Northwood's Kristn LaBorde tied it up 22 minutes later after taking a corner kick from Natalie Carter.
Carter picked up her second assist of the game 12 minutes into the second half when her inbounds pass found Audrey Gatlin who put the ball past a screened Courtney Chambers, who was making her fourth straight start in goal for the Wayland women.
Two WBU freshmen paired up to make it 2-2 with 27 minutes remaining. Sarah Castro went over a tangle of players in front of the net to head Madisson Abbott's perfectly placed corner kick past the NU goaltender.
Kraemer, a sophomore, led all Pioneer women with seven shots, five of which were on goal. Holland, a sophomore who finished the game with three points on a goal and an assist, forced four saves on her seven shots.
Chambers won her third game of the year. The junior made five saves in the contest, but faced only one shot in the OT period and it hit the crossbar.
The Pioneers outshot the Knight women 27-17 and had 12 more shots on goal. They outshot the visitors 4-1 in overtime. NU goalkeeper Betsabe Tores made 16 saves in the game, three in the overtime period.
WBU gets to play before its home fans one more time this week when they host Southwestern Christian University on Friday. That contest is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
