The Wayland Baptist men won their second conference game of the season on Thursday evening, a 3-2 overtime thriller at Hilliard Field.  Junior Saman Hassan put in a penalty kick with 2:10 left in the first extra period for the victory.  It was the fourth penalty kick goal of the season for the Pioneers and the second game-winner in OT.

St. Gregory's had a 1-0 lead at the intermission after Hugo Mondragon's tenth goal of the season.  WBU wasted no time in the second half, however, scoring two goals within the first three minutes of the period to go up 2-1.

Freshman Colt Welch found the back of the net for the first time this season on a pretty break-away down the left side.  Forty-five seconds later Aaron Kurtz deflected a shot from the left side off the far right post into the net.  Hassan got the lone assist.

Mondragon put back the rebound of his own penalty kick to tie the game at the 79:11 mark.  John Ramses-Thomas, the Pioneer freshman goalkeeper, made the stop on the initial play, but could not control the rebound, and Mondragon squeezed a shot through a small opening on the right side of the net.

WBU coach Jamath Shoffner said both teams played tough in the match, which was extremely physical with the two teams combining for 37 fouls.

"We really fought hard the entire match.  The first half was difficult because it was so windy.  We were able to press a little more in the second period because we had the wind, and we took it to them.

"St. Greg's fought hard the whole match, as well.  I give them a lot of credit for trying to disrupt our play."

The Cavaliers edged out the Pioneers in shots attempted, 15-13, but each team put six on goal.  Thomas had four saves in the contest, including three in the final period.  Hassan's PK was the only shot on goal by either team in overtime.

The Wayland men are now 5-4-2 on the season and 2-1 in conference action.  Shoffner's squad will host Oklahoma Baptist University, which is 5-6 overall and 1-2 in the SAC, Saturday afternoon at Hilliard Field.  Start time for that contest has been changed to 1 p.m.
