The NAIA 2008 and 2009 Women's Indoor and Outdoor Coach of the Year, Brian Whitlock took over the Pioneer track and field program in 2007, leading the Pioneer women's teams to the NAIA titles in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. It was the first-ever outdoor title in WBU women's history and the fourth indoor championship.

During the 2008 indoor and outdoor seasons, a total of 11 new school records were broken by members of the Pioneer men's and women's teams. The women won six events at the national championships and athletes on the two teams combined to bring home 37 All-American designations.

A 2001 graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University where he was a Sooner Athletic Conference Cross Country Champion and a NAIA All-American, Coach Whitlock came to Wayland in 2004 as head cross country coach. He immediately turned the program from an after-thought to a national contender.

In his first year at Wayland, Coach Whitlock was named the 2004 Sooner Athletic Conference and Region VI Men's Coach of the Year after leading Wayland to a second place finish. He was also named the 2006 and 2007 Women's SAC Coach of the Year. The Pioneer men's team has qualified for the NAIA Cross Country Championships two of the past three years. They were ranked ninth in the final NAIA Top 25 in 2005 and were 14th in 2006. Two of his runners earned NAIA All-American recognition and captured individual conference championships.

The Wayland cross country women, who were ranked nationally in 2006 for the first time in over a decade, won the conference and regional titles in 2007 and has qualified for the national championships the past two years, finishing sixth at the 2007 NAIA meet.

As a collegian, Coach Whitlock was also a national track and field qualifier in the 1000-meter run and the steeplechase, and was the SAC Champion in the 5K.

Former Wayland Baptist All-American track athlete Rohan Thompson is the associate head coach of the Pioneer track and field program. In his three seasons on the WBU coaching staff, the Pioneers have won two Indoor and two Outdoor National Track and Field Championships.

Coach Thompsons's sprinters set three school records during the 2008 indoor and outdoor seasons and won five national championships in individual and relay events. In 2009, Wayland's sprinters established four more school marks, swept the women's short sprints at the NAIA championships, and the 4x100-meter relay team captured its third consecutive national title.

The former sprinter from Barbados himself won four NAIA All-American honors during his three years at Wayland. Coach Thompson worked as a graduate assistant for the program for one year after his collegiate elibility ended.

The 2006 recipient of the Bill Hardage Champions of Character Award at WBU, Coach Thompson is a two-time Daktronics/NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete and was a Pioneer co-captain during his senior season. He was named the track team's Most Valuable Male Athlete in 2005 and won Sooner Athletic Conference Championship honors in the 100 meters in 2004.

Coach Thompson and his wife, Tameka, have a daughter, Tamaya who is six, and a new son, Christian, who was born in December.

Jason Carter is a six-time national qualifier for the NAIA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. A sprinter, Carter's specialty was the 4000-meters, although he qualified for the indoor 200-meters in 2007.

A native of Christ Church, Barbados, Carter was a member of the 2008 Outdoor 4x400-meter relay team which came in seventh at the national outdoor meet.
