Pioneers handle Bacone, Warner Pacific

In its first official competition of the season, the No. 7 Wayland Baptist women's wrestling team defeated No.15 Warner Pacific (Ore.) and No. 22 Bacone (Okla.) in duals Wednesday night in the Laney Center.

The Pioneers and Bacone's Warriors each had two teams competing while Warner Pacific's Lady Knights had one.WBU's first team defeated BC's first team, 47-1, and also beat WPC's team, 35-11. Wayland's second team defeated both Warrior teams, 23-16 over the first and 29-16 over the second.

For WBU coach Aaron Meister, the competition was a good start to begin the long season.

"I was pleased with the outcome," Meister said. "We were able to win all three duals, which is really good. Just seeing the girls go out there and compete and work hard was really fulfilling, and to come out with wins was even better.

"It's good to see them have faith and execute those moves and strategies in live action."

Six Pioneers – Brittany Bates, Kierra Boyce, Marina Briceño, Brittany Marshall, Tamyra Mensah and Tarkyia Mensah – went undefeated.

"It was an overall team effort," Meister said.

With its first dual in the books, the Pioneers now head to Oklahoma City for the Cliff Keen Open on Friday and Saturday. The tournament features 30 teams, with each weight class producing an individual champion.

Meister hopes this weekend's matches will determine where his team is early in the season.

"We want to go up there and compete to the best of our abilities, wrestle smart and come away with some champions," he said. "I'd be really happy if we finished in the top five."
