2020 Fall Schedule Released
NORMAN, Okla. – Wayland Baptist's men's golf team has been named Academic National Champion for finishing with the top GPA in the NAIA. In addition, four Pioneers –
Johannes Hounsgaard,
Sentanio Minnie,
Joshua Smedema and
Sebastien Tremulot – all were named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars.
Announced by the Golf Coaches Association of American, Wayland was recognized as academic national champion along with Kentucky (NCAA Division I), Maryville (Division II), Swarthmore (Division III), Northeast Mississippi (NJCAA Division I), and South Mountain (NJCAA Division II).
Wayland finished the 2019-20 season with a team GPA of 3.74. Kentucky turned in the top overall GPA in all divisions with a 3.89. WBU was one of just six NAIA schools to earn Presidents Special Recognition for maintaining a 3.5 or higher GPA.
A total of 250 schools submitted GPA's of 3.0 or above, with 95 of those schools earning Presidents Special Recognition Honors, finishing with a team GPA of 3.5 and above.
Meanwhile, Hounsgaard, Minnie, Smedema and Tremulot all were recognized as Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars. To be eligible, an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior academically, have a stroke-average under 78.0 (in NAIA), and maintain a minimum cumulative career GPA of 3.2. For 2019-20 only, they must have participated in 40 percent of the team's competitive rounds.
In 2019-20, Hounsgaard was a sophomore, from Chieming, Germany; Minnie, a senior business administration major, from Johannesburg, South Africa; Smedema, an exercise sport science major from Cape Town, South Africa; and Tremulot, a senior business administration major from La Clusaz, Rhone-Alpes, France.
A total of 27 NAIA student-athletes were recognized in what was the second wave of selections.
